Day 8 – 7 November
The plan for the day was to return to Belize City. But, along the way we would take a detour near the town of Orange Walk and go on a river cruise to visit the a Mayan site (Lamanai). However, as we headed out of town, Dan felt that the car was not driving properly. We checked out the wheels and steering and could find no problems other than a ruined CV joint that made the truck pull to the left and shimmy excessively whenever it popped out of line. We continued driving but Dan felt that the car would not make it to Belize City. We called Budget and they said they’d have another vehicle for us in about 3 hours.
We waited and then got our third car of the trip. We now had missed the Lamanai River trip, so we headed to Orange Walk to have lunch. We found an excellent bakery that sold lots of baked goods including meat pies. Rather than visit Lamanai, we went to Altun Ha. This Mayan site is off of the "Old Northern Highway" on our way to Belize City. Click here for pictures of Altun Ha.
Then, we drove to Belize City, checked into the hotel by the airport and had dinner.
Day 9 – 8 November
We returned the rental car and they didn’t add any extra charges except some fuel charges because the other two rental cars were not full when they arrived in Belize City. Then, we all had uneventful flights back home. David's flight was a few hours after the others, so he went to the "waving lounge" and took pictures of the departure.
It was raining in Tucson and cold in Virginia. This is the first trip that David has taken recently when he returned home to colder weather.
Since we opened this web page to the public we have gotten lots of questions from people. Here are the answers to the top four;
1) No, we did not meet John McAfee
2) No, we did not buy anything, but we are going back to look more seriously
3) No, we did not get sick, even though we ate fresh food, drank the water and breathed the air
4) No, we did not feel the earthquake
