2011 trip to Antelope Canyon and around

Bob and Lee were visiting David and Stacy and said they wanted to go to Antelope Canyon.  David and Stacy had heard about the place, but had not been.

Lee got hotel reservations and set up a guide (The canyons are on Navajo land and the only way to go into the canyons is with a guide).  We went with Navajo Antelope Canyon Tours, which we VERY highly recommend.  The tour we did was a photography tour.  It was worth the extra money.

It was about an 8 hour drive from Tucson up to Page.  We arrived late and had dinner at our hotel.

The next day we went to the meeting point where Carol Bigthumb met us and set us up with Gabe, her nephew and one of her guides.  We were with a couple from Quebec.

Click here for a map showing where the different canyons are.

Our first stop was Rattlesnake Canyon.  This is a ‘private’ canyon and we were the only people in it. It is smaller that Upper Antelope Canyon, but it was wonderful and we were alone.

Next, we went to the rightly famous Upper Antelope Canyon.  When the sun is high, it shines down into the very deep slot canyon and forms sun-beams.  Since we were there in March, the sun was not high enough for many beams, but Gabe knew where and when we needed to be to take the pictures.

We then went to Sheepshead Canyon, which is another of the ‘private’ canyons.  On our drive back Gabe drove into a canyon with a VERY tight squeeze for the truck.

On our way back to our hotel, we hiked into Horseshoe Bend, which is a loop of the Colorado river down in the Grand Canyon.  We stopped at the Glen Canyon Dam scenic view, then at the visitors center for the dam.  We got back to our hotel around sun-set.

On the drive back to Tucson, we stopped by Montezuma’s well and Montezuma’s Castle.  Bob and Lee had been to the 'Castle' back in the ‘70s when they were in Arizona.  David and Stacy had not been there before.

Just a technical note on the color in the pictures.  In the canyons you will see that there are two very different color balances.  One is Canon and the other is Nikon.

There are some QuickTime movies in with the pictures.  If you can not read the QuickTime files, then Get a Mac or go to the Apple QuickTime page.

When the QuickTime VR windows open, click in the window and while holding down the button, move the cursor around (have fun).
